Farmington Hills area dental office provides dental caps, or crowns, for teeth
What is the procedure for placing a dental crown?Dental crowns are placed over the course of two dental appointments. During the first appointment, the dentist will remove the surrounding enamel of the tooth. Impressions are made and used to create the final restoration in an outside laboratory, while the patient is fitted with a temporary crown. In approximately one to two weeks, the final dental crown is completed and sent to the dentist. Patients come back into the office to remove the temporary restoration and bond the new one in place.
How long will my dental crown last?Dental crowns are made in a laboratory with porcelain materials that are strong, durable, and mimic the look of natural tooth enamel. In doing so, it ensures a more natural-looking restoration that often does not look like a dental repair has occurred. With proper care and attention, most patients will enjoy their dental crowns for many years.
When are dental crowns used?Caps may be recommended by a dentist for many reasons. Dental crowns can:
- Protect a tooth that has been weakened by root canal therapy or a large cavity
- Conceal certain aesthetic flaws on teeth that may not be appropriately addressed with veneers
- Maintain strength in a tooth that has been damaged extensively by decay or disease
- Restore a dental implant and act as a false tooth
- Be integrated into other dental restorations such as dental bridges to replace missing teeth
