Detroit patients benefit from affordable dental implants
By Dr. Richard Bernstein
Several factors, within or beyond control, can influence a person's risk for, or lead to tooth loss, such as:
- Age and gender (males and those over 35 years of age are more susceptible)
- Lack of an appropriate oral hygiene routine which includes brushing and flossing
- Not scheduling regular professional examinations and cleanings
- Smoking or any tobacco usage
- Certain health conditions, including:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Gum disease
- Injuries and accidents
- Extraction of decayed teeth
Considered the ideal treatment for tooth loss in most instances, dental implants actually replace the entire root of the tooth as well as the visible portion. A sturdy and durable titanium post is surgically placed into the bone of the jaw and then fuses securely over time. As the bone heals and bonds to the implant, it is strengthened to provide greater support for the surrounding teeth.
Once securely anchored in the bone, an extension post, called an abutment, is added to the titanium implant, and it is then topped with a natural-looking dental crown. Dental implants look, feel, and function just like original, healthy teeth and are considered a permanent restoration.
