Farmington Hills residents ask, “Where can I find implant dentistry near me?
By Dr. Richard Bernstein
If a patient is healthy enough to undergo oral surgery or even an extraction, they are healthy enough to be considered a candidate for implant surgery. The patient does need to have healthy gums, a strong enough bone structure to support the implant, and must be committed to good oral hygiene. The dentist will evaluate candidates that are heavy smokers, have chronic uncontrolled heart disease or diabetes, or have had radiation treatment, as this could contraindicate implant treatment.
The journey towards implant treatment begins with the consultation. On the day of the surgery, the dentist will place a small titanium post into the socket of the missing tooth. While the jaw heals, the bone will grow around the post, anchoring it in place. This healing, also known as osseointegration, can take anywhere from six and twelve weeks. A small post called an abutment is then attached to the implant. The dentist will make impressions of the patient's bite, the teeth, and their arrangement in the mouth. A crown is created using these impressions and color matching to the other teeth. The crown is then attached to the abutment.
The tooth will feel, look, and function just like the other teeth, and oral care is no different. Brushing and flossing every day is still required, as are regular checkups every six months with the dentist.
